: Can someone solve this problem for me?
solve by using quadratic formula
x^2-4x-60=0
This question is from textbook Beginning Algebra

Answer by mathchemprofessor(65)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x^2-4x-60=0
This is of the form,
ax^2+bx+c=0
Comparing the above two equations,
a=1,b=-4, c=-60
Quadradic formula:
x =(-b+sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a
Substituting the values of a,b and c, from the given equation,
x=(-(-4) ħsqrt(-4)^2-4(1)(-60))/2*1
=( 4ħsqrt(16+240))/2*1
= (4ħsqrt256)/2
= (4ħ16)/2
So, x= (4+16)/2 or x = (4-16)/2
x=20/2=10 or x= -12/2=-6
