SOLUTION: I'm using the quadratic formula to solve:
3x=1-1/x
I multiplied the x out and got: 3x^2=x-1
I put it in standard form and came up with: 3x^2-x+1

Question 486647: I'm using the quadratic formula to solve:
3x=1-1/x
I multiplied the x out and got: 3x^2=x-1
I put it in standard form and came up with: 3x^2-x+1
a=3 b=-1 c=1
when I work out the equation I get -11 under the radical which would mean there is no real solution.
did I work out the problem correctly?

Yes.
The domain of real f(x) = 3x + 1/x -1 excludes x=0 and and f(x) < 0 for x < 0 and f(x) > 0 for x > 0, so f(x) = 0 is not possible.
