Question 451458: 2x^+5x+2=
I was doing fine with equations without the first variable was added - but now that there's a 2x^ I'm a bit stumpted - please help with this one and I can figure the rest of them out

Answer by confusedgirl81(14)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2x^2+5x+2=0, I think that is the equation you was seeking help on.
You are trying to find solutions to make the equation equal 0.
This can be factored.
2x^2+5x+2=0
(2x+1)(x+2)=0 if you multiply these two you will get the original equation. These are the factors for the original equation. Now set each factor to zero.
2x+1=0
2x=-1
x=-1/2 or x=-.5

x+2=0
x=-2

now you have 2 solutions that will make the original equation true. To verify replace x with its new values. x=-.5 and x=-2

2x^2+5x+2=0
2(-.5)^2+5(-.5)+2=0
.5-2.5+2=0
0 = 0

2x^2+5x+2=0
2(-2)^2+5(-2)+2=0
8-10+2=0
0 = 0
