Question 3659: (x-5)^2-100=0
Found 2 solutions by akr, Zenock:
Answer by akr(2) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x - 5)^2 - 100 = 0
i.e., (x - 5)^2 = 100
Take SQRT: (x - 5) = + 10, - 10
Therefore, x = 15, -5

Answer by Zenock(15) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
akr's answer is absolutely correct, HOWEVER...
Note that when you have an equation of the form:
A%5E2-B%5E2
it is refered to as the difference of two squares and can be factored like this:
%28A%2BB%29%28A-B%29
Here we can let:
A%5E2=%28x-5%29%5E2
and
B%5E2=100
Then this factors to:
((x-5)+10)((x-5)-10))=0
and simplified to:
(x+5)(x-15)=0
So either x+5=0 or x-15=0 thus x=-5 or x=15.
Watch for the difference of two squares they show up all the time and they make some problems much easier.
