Put constant term on the right:



Multiply by 4 times the lead coefficient:



Add the original first degree term coefficient squared.



Factor the perfect square on the left:



Take the square root of both sides (positive and negative)



Add opposite of the new constant term on the left:



Multiply by the reciprocal of the coefficient on :



And simplify:
