If (A times B equals zero), then either or (or possibly both are zero)
So if , then or . Solve the second equation for 'x' (by subtracting 6 from both sides) to get
So the solutions are or
Notice how if you plug in either or , at least one factor will go to zero and if you multiply everything out, everything goes to zero.

x(x+6)=0
-----------
If the product is zero, either x or x+6 has to be zero.
--> x = 0
---------
x+6 = 0
x = -6
-------
Quadratic (2nd order) equations have 2 solutions.
Cubic (3rd order) have 3, etc.
