let x be the smaller number

let (5+x) be the larger number
the product of two numbers is 36

x(x+5) = 36
x^2 + 5x = 36
find the value of x using the quadratic equation
the answere will be x = 4 and x = -9
therefore the smaller number is 4 and the larger number is 9
