Question 292613: The math problem says solve for 'X'
5x^2-3x=1
i had to subract from both sides
5x^2-3x-1=1-1
5x^2-3x-1=0
it says i have to apply the quadratic formula. Once i plugged my numbers in for -4AC it says its wrong.. how do i plugg them in ? so i can finnish solivng the rest of the equation.

not just 4ac but the whole quadratic formula.
Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation with variable
Quadratic equation (in our case ) has the following solutons:

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant : .

Discriminant d=29 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: .

Quadratic expression can be factored:

Again, the answer is: 0.83851648071345, -0.23851648071345. Here's your graph:

Answer by Edwin McCravy(20054)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

When you get here:

Compare that to

and you can see that , and

Then you write

Now substitute for , for , and for c
in that equation, and when you do you get:

Then you simplify that:

So you have two solutions.

Solution 1 has a + where the ± is

Then use your calculator to get the approximation for solution 1:

Solution 2 has a - where the ± is

Then use your calculator to get the approximation for solution 2:
