Question 288295: I asked this problem earlier, but have learned how to type it so that it is easier for you to read and understand. I need to square this problem.
Problem: 2x^2+4x-1=0
Formula I used was:
I got:

then
then
then (this is supposed to read "+ or - 2" not -2)
then (this is supposed to read "+ or - 2", not -2)
then after simplifying, I get

My book says the answer is:
I can't figure out where I went wrong, so I can't answer my real question of 2x^2+10x-3=0.
Any help is appreciated!! Thank you!

My book says the answer is:
I can't figure out where I went wrong, so I can't answer my real question of 2x^2+10x-3=0.

2x^2+10x-3=0
Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE quadratic equation (work shown, graph etc)
Quadratic equation (in our case ) has the following solutons:

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant : .

Discriminant d=124 is greater than zero. That means that there are two solutions: .

Quadratic expression can be factored:

Again, the answer is: 0.283882181415011, -5.28388218141501. Here's your graph:

---------------------
= (-5 ± sqrt(31))/2
