Question 288223: i am doing my math homework right now and i keep trying to solve a word problem that has to do with geometry and and quadratics...the word problem says The legs of an isosceles triangle measure two x to the fourth power plus 2x minus one units. The perimeter of the triangle is 5x to the fourth power minus 2x to the third power plus x minus three units write a polynomial that represents the measure of the base of the triangle

The problem as I understand it:
:
The legs of an isosceles triangle measure: 2x^4 + 2x - 1.
The perimeter of the triangle is 5x^4 -2x^3 + x - 3.
write a polynomial that represents the measure of the base of the triangle
:
Subtract the two legs from the perimeter to find the base:
:
5x^4 - 2x^3 + x - 3 - 2(2x^4 + 2x - 1)
:
5x^4 - 2x^3 + x - 3 - 4x^4 - 4x + 2
Combine like terms
5x^4 - 4x^4 - 2x^3 + x - 4x - 3 + 2
:
x^4 - 2x^3 - 3x - 1; is the base
