Question 26263: Can anyone help me with a word problem that I am stuck on? I need to put it into an equation and solve it. It is:
As part of an exercise regiment, you walk 2 miles on an indoor track. Then you jog at twice your walking speed for another 2 miles. If the total time spent walking and jogging is 1 hour, find the walking and jogging rates.
Thank you!
Answer by Paul(988) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Walking speed is xmph
Jogging sppeed is 2xmph
Total distance for jogging is 2miles.
TOtal distance for walking is 2 miles.
And total SUM of these two gives the time to be 1 hour.
Expression:
2(2x+x)=(2x)(x)
REMOVE "-"
x=3
2(3)=6
Hence, the walking rate was 3mph and the jogging rate was 6mph.
Paul.
