Question 236529: I am using this sight to figure out quadratic equations, but I am not sure what a certain symbol is that is being used. Here is the equation:
x= [-12 +- sqrt (144.4-4* -0.2*11)]/(-0.4)
x= [-12 +- sqrt (152.8)]/(-0.4)
My question is what does the star stand for to make it come out to 152.8?

THE EQUATION?
-.2X+12X+11=0
x= [-12 +- sqrt (144{.4}-4* -0.2*11)]/(-0.4) BELIEVE THE 144.4 SHOULD BE 144.
x= [-12 +- sqrt (152.8)]/(-0.4)
---------------------------------------
I BELIEVE THE (*) = MULTIPLY.
----------------------------------------
x=(-12+-12.36)/-.4
x=(-12+12.36)/-.4
x=.36/-.4
x=-.9 ans.
x=(-12-12.36)/.4
x=-24.36/-.4
x=60.9 ans.

the * (asterisk) represents multiplication
___ remember the hierarchy of operations (PEMDAS)
144 - (4 (-0.2 (11)))
144 - (4 (-2.2))
144 - (-8.8)
144 + 8.8
152.8
