Question 234369: Hi
Need Help with this Question
Gerald hit his golfball down the fairway. The path the ball followed was parabolic in the shape with the relationship:
h=2d-1/30^2
Where h is the height above the ground of the golf ball when it is a horizontal distance d from him. Both h and d are in meters. How far from Gerald did the golf ball land?

Gerald hit his golfball down the fairway.
The path the ball followed was parabolic in the shape with the relationship:
h=2d-1/30^2;
I think the equation should be -
(What you have, is not a parabola)
;
Where h is the height above the ground of the golf ball when it is a horizontal distance d from him.
Both h and d are in meters. How far from Gerald did the golf ball land?
:
When the ball lands h = 0, therefore, we can write it:
d^2 + 2d = 0
multiply equation by -30, gets rid of the fraction & changes the signs & you have:
d^2 - 60d = 0
;
Factor out d
d(d - 60) = 0
:
Two solutions
d = 0 (when the ball is hit)
and
d = 60, when the ball lands
