A rectangular scrapbook page has an area of 180 inches squared.
If the length of the page is two less than twice the width, find the width of the page.
;
Let x = the width
it says,"the length of the page is two less than twice the width," therefore;
(2x - 2) = the length
:
Area = width * length, = 180, therfore:
x(2x - 2) = 180
2x^2 - 2x - 180 = 0
A quadratic equation, simplify, divide by 2
x^2 - x - 90 = 0
Factors to:
(x-10)(x+9) = 0
the positive solution is what we want here
x = 10" is the width
;
;
Is this true?
Length = 2(10) - 2 = 18
18 * 10 = 180
