Use the quadratic formula to get:
x = [-4 +- sqrt(16 - 4*3*-8)]/6
---
x = [-4 +- sqrt(112)]/6
---
x = [-4 +- 4sqrt(7)]/6
---
x = (-2/3) +- (2/3)sqrt(7)
