Question 188904: Length of a Line Segment
14. An architect's drawing shows a pipe running diagonally under a basement floor from a floor drain to a sewer connection. The floor drain is at a point
2 m east and 2 m north of the southeast corner of the basement. The sewer connection is 10 m east 17 m north of the corner. The pipe costs $3.15 per metre, including taxes. How much should the builder budget for pipe for the floor drain?
Thanks and i dont understand how to solve it please help me!!!

14. An architect's drawing shows a pipe running diagonally under a basement
floor from a floor drain to a sewer connection. The floor drain is at a point
2 m east and 2 m north of the southeast corner of the basement.
The sewer connection is 10 m east 17 m north of the corner.
The pipe costs $3.15 per metre, including taxes.
How much should the builder budget for pipe for the floor drain?
:
This involves finding the hypotenuse of a right triangle
:
Draw a diagram of this on some graph paper
The reference point is the southwest side of the basement (not the southeast)
:
Measure off two units to the right and two units up, designate as the drain.
From the same reference point measure off 10 units to the right and 17 units up
Designate as the connection
:
Looking at this you can see the sides of the right triangle will be 8 and 15
Find the hypotenuse (h)
h =
h =
h = 17 units
:
Multiply by $3.15 to find the cost of this length of pipe
17 * 3.15 = $53.55, probably should allow $60 for pipe
