Start with the given equation


What the book is doing is completing the square on the left side (which will help isolate "x").


Take half of the "x" coefficient -12 to get -6. Square -6 to get 36. Add this value to both sides.


Combine like terms.


Factor the left side


Take the square root of both sides.

or Take the square root of 81 to get 9


or Add 6 to both sides.
