Your Problem:
x = 8/(2*3) = 4/3

Y=3X^2-8X-5
(graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -10 to 10, 3x^2 -8x -5).
Using the quadratic equation we get x=3.1893 & -.5225.
(3.1893+.5225)/2=1.856 is the line of symmetry.
