Question 143264: y - 5 > -17
Is the answer -12? and I also have to graph this also. Would the graph be an [ on the -12 on the graph line and the arrow point towards minus -13, and -14 ect? Or is it not the [ or a ), ( instead? So cinfused with these. Help please.

Start with the given inequality

Add 5 to both sides

Combine like terms on the right side

--------------------------------------------------------------
Answer:
So our answer is

So the answer in interval notation is

note: that means that a "(" would go above the -12 on the graph

Now lets graph the solution set

Start with the given inequality

Plot the point on a number line

Now plug in into the inequality

Since is true, this means that we shade the entire region that is in.

So shade to the right of . Note: there is a open circle at

You started correctly by adding 5 to both sides of the inequality yielding , read "y is greater than -12" So the answer is NOT -12. In fact, -12 is not in the solution set to this inequality.

Since you have a "greater than" sign (as opposed to a "greater than or equal to" sign), you have to exclude the endpoint, namely -12, therefore on the number line graph you need an open circle. And if you need to express it in interval notation, you will need "(" as opposed to "[" to indicate exclusion of the endpoint.

Since "y is greater than -12" y can be ANYTHING larger. Larger on the number line is ALWAYS to the right. So on the number line you need an open circle at -12 and an arrow that goes to the right. For interval notation: (,)
