Since the road is perpendicular to the railroad track, and the collision detector measures the straight line distance from the car to the potential collision, you have two sides of a right triangle -- one of the legs and the hypotenuse.
The simple way to find the third side is to recognize that you have a 3:4:5 right triangle which tells you the third side has to be 40 meters.
Or you can use the Pythagorean Theorem
