These steps are taken to bring variables (x) on left side and numbers on the other
8x-12=5x-3
add 12 to both sides
8x-12+12 = 5x-3+12
8x = 5x-9
subtract 5x from both sides
8x -5x = 5x-5x+9
3x =9
divide both sides by 3
3x/3 = 9/3
x=3

.

            Step by step

    8x - 12 = 5x - 3

    8x - 5x = 12 - 3    (collect x-terms on the left side;
                         collect constant terms on the right side;
                         moving the terms from side to side, change their signs)

      3x    =    9

       x    =    9/3 = 3.
