A = Lw 

78ft^2 = (2x + 1)(x)

2x^2  + x - 78 = 0

Solving using the Pythagorean Theorem

   (tossing out negative solution for length)



x = 6ft  the width of the batter's box    

L = 2x +x = 13ft
