New dimensions are  (16+2x) by (22+2x).


The area equation is

    (16+2x) * (22+2x) = 2*16*22


Simplify and solve for x

    16*22 + 44x + 32x + 4x^2 = 2*16*22

    4x^2 + 76x - 16*22 = 0

     x^2 + 19x - 88 = 0


At this point, use the quadratic formula and choose positive root.


ANSWER.  3.851 cm (approximately).
