I assume you mean 2x^2 +2x -1 = 0, then
:
2x^2 +2x = 1
:
divide both sides of = by 2
:
x^2 +x = 0.5
:
x^2 +x +0.25 = 0.5 +0.25 = 0.75
:
(x +0.5)^2 = 0.75
:
take square root of both sides of =
:
x +0.5 = + or -square root(0.75)
:
Two solutions for x
:
x = -0.5 +square root(0.75)
:
x = -0.5 -square root(0.75)
:
Note square root(0.75) = 0.5 * square root(3) = 0.866
:
therefore the two solutions for x are
:
x = 0.366 or x = -1.366
:
check solutions by substituting for x in original equation
:
2(0.366)^2 +2(0.366) -1 = 0
:
0 = 0
:
2(-1.366)^2 +2(-1.366) -1 = 0
:
0 = 0
:
answer checks for both values of x
