Question 114059: Some students planned for a get-together. The budget for food was $500. Five of the students failed to come because of the distance and therefore the cost of food for each member increased by $5. How many students attended the get-together?
Answer by josmiceli(19441)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
c = cost per student
n = number of students originally

substitute c in the 1st for c in the 2nd

divide both sides by 5

multiply both sides by

subtract 100n from both sides

use the quadratic formula
a = 1
b = -5
c = -500

ignore this answer, n can't be negative

20 students attended, because 5 failed to come
check:

-----------------

the cost would have been $20 per student if all had showed up
-----------------

the cost was $25 per student when 5 didn't show up

OK
