Question 1074586: How far will the shot be horizontally from where Andy releases it when it first lands on the field? Explain your answer. The discriminant of the equation is 13, but what does it mean in regards to how fare the shot was? Equation is y= -x^2/10+9x/10+11/5.

To answer the question, you need to solve the equation

y = 0,   i.e.

 +  +  = 0.

As the first step, multiply both sides by 10 to rid of the denominators. You will get

 = 0,   or

 = 0.

Facto the quadratic polynomial

(x-11)*(x+2) = 0.

The only positive root is x = 11.

Answer. How far the shot was ? 11 feet.

Plot y = + +

When you read these lessons, you will know how the discriminant of the quadratic equation relates to its solution.

By the way, the discriminant of the given equation is 169, not 13.
And this clearly shows that you DON't KNOW what the discriminant of a quadratic equation is.
