Start with the given equation

Add 7 to both sides

Combine like terms

Solved by pluggable solver: Quadratic Formula
Let's use the quadratic formula to solve for x:

Starting with the general quadratic

the general solution using the quadratic equation is:

So lets solve ( notice , , and )

Plug in a=1, b=-7, and c=6

Negate -7 to get 7

Square -7 to get 49 (note: remember when you square -7, you must square the negative as well. This is because .)

Multiply to get

Combine like terms in the radicand (everything under the square root)

Simplify the square root (note: If you need help with simplifying the square root, check out this solver)

Multiply 2 and 1 to get 2

So now the expression breaks down into two parts

or

Lets look at the first part:

Add the terms in the numerator

Divide

So one answer is

Now lets look at the second part:

Subtract the terms in the numerator

Divide

So another answer is

So our solutions are:

or

x^2 - 7x - 1= -7
First you must set up the equation in quadratic form. Ax^2+bx+c=0
In order to do that you must first add -7 to the other side to get...
x^2-7x-1+7=0
x^2-7x+6=0
It is now in quadratic form.
x^2=a
-7=b
6=c

You plug all of that into the quadratic formula.
Now you start doing your order of operations.

x = (--7 +- 5/(2)
x = (++7 +- 5/(2)
x = (++7 + 5/(2)-------->12/2=6
x = (++7 - 5/(2)-------->2/2=1
So the solution set is...
x=6 or x=1
