given the equation s=-16t^2+initial velocity x t+initial height, a rocket is fired upward from ground level with an initial velocity of 1600 feet/sec. When does the rocket reach its maximum height and how high is it at that time?
----------------
EQUATION:
s(t) = -16t^2 + 1600x
------------------
You have a quadratic with a = -16 and b = 1600
-----------
Maximum height occurs when t = -b/2a = -1600/(-32) = 50 seconds
--------------
Height at that time is s(50):
s(50) = -16(50^2) + 1600(50) = 40,000 ft.
