A picture frame measures 40cm by 30cm and 704cm^2 of picture shows. Find the width of the frame.

(30-2x)(40-2x)=704
4x^2-140x+496=0
4(4x^2-140x+496)=0
(x^2-4x)-(31x+124)=0
(x-4)(x-31)
x=4 or x=31

you're not doing anything wrong.
the answer is x = 4.
your "possible" answers are x = 4 or x = 31.
x = 31 is not possible because then the length and width of the picture would be negative.
that means that x = 4 is your answer.
