Write an equation: x if the width of a uniform path of garden that is 8 m wide and 10 m long. The area of the path is 40 m^2.

I will assume that the path around the garden is outside the garden.
(It was not clearly pronounced in the condition although.)

Then the equation is

(L+2x)*(W+2x) - LW = 40.

Here L is the length of the garden and W is the garden width.
L and W are given.
