Plugging in to the quadratic formula we get
x = (-8 +/- sqrt(8^2 - 4(1)(-3)))/2
x = (-8 +/- sqrt(64 + 12))/2

x = (-8 +/- 2*sqrt(19))/2
x = -4 +/- sqrt(19
