When you say the ratio was 5:3 adults to kids, that means that out of 8 (5+3), 5 were adults and 3 were students.
You can then set up a ratio.
If 3 out of 8 are kids, then the total number of kids, X, to the total attendance is in a ratio.
3%2F8=X%2F480
%283%2F8%29%2A480=X
X=180
There were 180 kids (and 300 adults) in attendance.

5/3=adults/kids
5+3=8
5/8 were adults and 3/8 were kids. Once you understand this, ratios get easier.
x/480=3/8 Proportion
480x/480=480*3/8
x=180 kids
