Question 171905: Hello, to anyone that can help, this is a story problem and the bane of my existance. I will be appreciative to anyone who can help. Here it is:
To estimate animal populations, biologists count the total number of animals in a small section of a habitat. The total population of animals is directly proportional to the size of the habitat (in acres) polled.First we are asked to a write an equation using only one variable that could be used to solve for the constant of variation k.
Then it says that they surveyed 100 miles of ground and found 12 deer. They want the constant of variation k.
And the third part to the question: if the entire nature preserve is 2,500 acres, then what is the total white tail deer population in the preserve?
I think that the first question might be y=kx? But I can't be sure and then I cannot figure out how that affects problem number two. I think the third one is just a simple ration or proportion equation that would be
100/12=2500/x which would make x 300. Again not sure, and can't figure out how this fits in with the first two parts of the question. Please help, and thank you in advance

Question 163481: The annual cost in dollars for removing p% of the toxic chemicals from a town’s water supply is given by the formula C(p) 500,000/100-p
a) Use the accompanying graph to estimate the cost for removing 90% and 95% of the toxic chemicals.
b) Use the formula to find C(99.5) and C(99.9).

Question 161870: Cindy's job is to check computer printers for defects. Out of 420 printers she has to check, only 3 of the first 84 have been defective. Using this information, what is the best prediction of the total number of printers in this group that will be defective?
I know that 420/84 is 5 and that 5x3=15, but how do you set up the problem?

Question 176133: Hi there. I'm currently trying to complete an assignment and the first question has me stumped. I've tried looking up how to do it, tried ratio etc and can't for the life of me work out the formula I'm meant to use. The question as printed is as follows:
'A commercial developer is considering three brown field sites on the perimeter of Leeds city centre. All plots are being sold by Leeds City Council at prices such that plot A is £20 000 less than plot B, and plot B is £ 30 000 more than plot C. The sale of the three plots will generate an income of £3 190 000 for the council. Determine the sale price for each plot.'
Thanks in advance for your help.

Question 178547: My shower is leaking at a rate of one drop per second.
A. how many cups of water per hour are being wasted?
B. how many gallons per week?
useful conversion; 1gallon = 4 quarts, 4 cups = 1 quart,
1 cup = 16tbsp, 1tbsp = 3tsp,
1tsp = 16drops.

Question 178894: I am having a very difficult time trying to reach the solution to this problem.
I am to find the value of x:
x/x+5 = x-4/x
So far, I've crosses multiplied them and arrived at 2x = x+5(x-4).
Then, I foiled out the second part of the equation and got:
2x = x^2-4x+5x-20 and simplified that to 2x=x^2+x-20.
Now, I'm at a loss to do. Was I supposed to have foiled out the problem and if so, did I do it incorrectly?
I don't know how to solve for x at this point in the equation.
