Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if a man walks at 4/5th of his usual rate he reaches office 5 minutes later than usual
how many minutes does he usually take to reach his office
:
let t = his normal time to work (in minutes)
then
(t+5) = his time when he is late
:
Change 4/5 to .8
let s = his normal rate
then
.8s = his slower rate
:
We don't really need to know his rate but will use it and get rid of it
the distance for each trip is the same
write a distance equation dist = speed * time
st = .8s(t + 5)
divide both sides by s
t = .8(t + 5)
t = .8t + 4
t - .8t = 4
.2t = 4
t = 4/.2
t = 20 min is his normal time
