Question 785994: You are thinking of purchasing an aquarium for your parents. You need to know how many fish to purchase for an aquarium. The rule of thumb is to purchase "as many fish that measure 3 inches, or 3 fish-inches, for each 2 gallons of water in an aquarium."
a) define variables for the quantities that are changing in this problem situation.
We came up with 3 fish/2gallons of water equals 1 fish/2 gallons of water. I don't know if this is correct.
b) write an equation for fish-inches based on the gallons of water.
we came up with: 3/2 = x/10
30/2x
x = 15 one inch fish per 10 gallons of water
or 5 three inch fish
Is that correct?
c) Use your equation to answer each of the following questions:
If an aquarium holds 10 gallons of water, how many fish inches should you purchase? Is 15 one inch fish or 5 three inch fish correct?
d) If you want to purchase a 5 - inch fish, two 2inch fish, and three 3 inch fish, how many gallons of water should the aquarium hold? Show your work. I have no clue how to do this.

Answer by harpazo(655)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let me be honest. We online tutors are volunteers. This means there is no pay. We do this because math is our passion. However, we seek students who, firstly, show some effort and secondly do not expect us to do your homework. No one will answer this question as one post. Instead, divide the question into several posts. In so doing, you will not only receive a quick reply but also give different tutors a chance to answer one "piece" of the question. Understand? We are not in the class with you. On exam day, you will be there alone. Math is not a spectator's sport. You must practice to improve. Please, repost your question one part at a time.
P.S. Also, post your question exactly as written in your notebook or textbook. Otherwise, you are just wasting your time in this or any other math forum. Ok? I hope this helps.
