Question 708414: a car traveled 281 miles in 4 hours and 41 minutes. What was the average speed of the car in miles per hour?
Answer by jndarrell(58)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Your proportion should be set up miles over hours.
You were given a mixed number for the time (4 hours 41 min). I find it easier to do these problems if you convert the minutes into a decimal. So take 41 and divide by 60=0.68 Now your time is 4.68hrs
281/4.68 = x/1
Cross multiply
4.68x=281
Divide both sides by 4.68 to get the x alone
x=60.04
Check the instructions you were provided for guidance on rounding. Also don't forget to put the units on your solution.
I would imagine round to a whole number, 60mph
