Question 68313: The area of a rectangle is 216ft.2 (squared) The length of the rectangle is 18 ft. If a scale drawing of the figure has a scale of 1/2in. = 6 ft. What are the dimensions of the rectangle on the scale drwaing.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
area of rectangle = length(l) times width(w) or A=lw
216=18w divide both sides by 18
w=12+ft
Now lets deal in feet:
%281%2F2%29+inch=%281%2F24%29+ft
Now we have two ratios to deal with:
First, the length
%28%281%2F24%29%2F6%29=x%2F18 cross multiply
6x=18%2F24 divide both sides by 6
x=3%2F24=%281%2F8%29+ft or
x=%281.5%29+inches------------------------------length scaled down
Next the width
%28%281%2F24%29%2F6%29=x%2F12 cross multiply
6x=12%2F24 divide both sides by 6
x=2%2F24=1%2F12+ft or
x=%281%29+inch-----------------------------width scaled down
1.5=%283%29+halves
3%286%29=18
18=18
1=%282%29+halves
2%286%29=12
12=12

Hope this helps---ptaylor
