a sheet of steel 8 1/4 feet long weight 325 pounds. A piece 2 1/2 feet long is sheared from the sheet. determine the weight of the 2 1/2- foot piece to the nearest whole pound.
---------------------------------------
Let the weight of the 2 1/2- foot piece be "x".
Proportion:
x/2 1/2 = 325/ 8 1/4
--------------------------
x/(5/2) = 325/(33/4)
--
x = (5/2)(325/(33/4))
x = 98.48 lbs.
