Question 178288: Greetings:
My son asked me for help in resolving this: 3/16+11/15+7+12. I do not want you to resolve the equatiation just if you can point me with guides so i can refresh my memory. or websites that can show me how to understand and resolve this kind of problems I will appreciate it very much. Thanks

Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
not sure about guides or websites...

the resolution is governed by the PEMDAS order of operations
__ Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

all of the quantities (fractions and whole numbers) add together

probably the hardest part is finding a "common denominator" so that you can add the fractions

the most straight forward technique is to multiply the denominators together

so the fractions in this case become (3*15)/(16*15) or 45/240
__ and (11*16)/(15*16) or 176/240

adding the quantities gives 19 221/240

hope this helps
