Question 1183168: Below is a proportions word problem and the answer. However, I am trying to determine which number,(300 or 30), should be the numerator and which number,(300 or 30),should be the denominator when solving this problem.
Question: "The Statue of Liberty is about 300 feet tall and about 30 feet
wide. The town of Unionville is building a smaller model for
their Fourth of July celebration. Unionville's statue will be 3
feet wide. How tall should Unionville's statue be?

Answer: 300 feet tall = ? feet tall
30 feet wide 3 feet wide
Compare the denominators.
300 feet tall = ? feet tall
30 feet wide 3 feet wide
To get from 30 to 3, divide by 10. Divide the numerator and
denominator by 10 to find how tall the statue should be.
300 feet tall ÷10 = 30 feet tall
30 feet wide ÷10 = 3 feet wide
Unionville's statue should be 30 feet tall."

.

The right proportion in this case is an equality of ratios of  CORRESPONDING  dimensions.

Usually,  and as a rule,  such proportion can be written in several different forms,

            (and there is no sense to list them all)

BUT,  if you write these proportions following to this rule,

then  THEY  ALL  ARE  EQUIVALENT  and produce the  SAME  ANSWER.

Answer: 300 feet tall = ? feet tall
30 feet wide 3 feet wide
Compare the denominators.
300 feet tall = ? feet tall
30 feet wide 3 feet wide
To get from 30 to 3, divide by 10. Divide the numerator and
denominator by 10 to find how tall the statue should be.
300 feet tall ÷10 = 30 feet tall
30 feet wide ÷10 = 3 feet wide
Unionville's statue should be 30 feet tall."
300 feet tall =  ? feet tall  ===> 300' = ?'
    30 feet wide 3 feet wide  ===> 30'    3'
Compare the denominators: 30 and 3

To get from 30 to 3, divide by 10. Divide the numerator and denominator by 10:
                              ===> 300' ÷ 10  = ?'  = 30'
                              ===>  30' ÷ 10    3'     3'
To find how tall the statue should be.: Unionville's statue should be 30 feet tall (see above).
