Question 1164098: A merchant has coffee worth $40 a pound that she wishes to mix with 60 pounds of coffee worth $80 a pound to get a mixture that can be sold for $50 a pound. How many pounds of the $40 coffee should be used?
Answer by ikleyn(52780)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
Your basic equation for the price of the mixture per pound is

     = 50 dollars per pound for the mixture.

It implies

    40x + 4800 = 50*(x+60)

    40x + 4800 = 50x + 3000

    4800 - 3000 = 50x - 40x

    1800        = 10x

    x           = 1800/10 = 180 pounds.

CHECK. = 50 dollars per pound for the mixture. ! Correct !
