2 - ax = -8
add ax to both sides of the equation and add 8 to both sides of the equation to get:
2 + 8 = ax
combine like terms to get:
10 = ax
divide both sides of the equation by a to get:
10/a = x
that's your solution.
a can't be equal to 0 because you would then get a division by 0 which is undefined.
a can be any number.
the value of x will change depending on the value of a.
if you graphed this equation, it would look like this:
you can see that there is an asymptote at a = 0.
the desmos calculator actually lets you graph as x = 10/a and does it correctly.
other calculators won't.
in most of those cases, you would have to set y = x and x = a and make your equation y = 10/x rather than x = 10/a.
i graphed both to show you that they generate the identical graph in desmos.
