Determine if (a square root symbol with a - inside it) is rational or irrational. Answer: A) Irrational B) Rational
I say: A) Irrational There is a negative symbol, also there is no number.

Find the altitude of the triangle.
the sides (height) are each 13 and the base (bottom) is 10.
Answer: ????
This one I can not find a formula in my books for solving this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evaluate (the square root symbol with 9 over 16 inside it) if possible.
I say not possible since it is not a whole number with a solution.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evaluate (small 3 next to the square root symbol with 1 over 64 inside it) if possible.
I say not possible since it is not a whole number with a solution.

Determine whether the square root of 77 is rational or irrational. Answer: A) Irrational B) Rational
I say irrational since there is no square.
Correct: It is irrational because 77 is not a perfect square.

Determine if (a square root symbol with a - inside it) is rational or irrational. Answer: A) Irrational B) Rational
I say: A) Irrational There is a negative symbol, also there is no number.
It is neither rational nor irrational; it is a complex or imaginary number.

Find the altitude of the triangle.
the sides (height) are each 13 and the base (bottom) is 10.
Answer: ????
This one I can not find a formula in my books for solving this.
Draw an altitude from the vertex to the base (side 10)
You get two right triangles:
altitude^2 + 5^2 = 13^2
altitude = sqrt(13^2-5^2) = sqrt144 = 12
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evaluate (the square root symbol with 9 over 16 inside it) if possible.
I say not possible since it is not a whole number with a solution.
sqrt(9/16) = [sqrt(9)]/[sqrt(16)] = 3/4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evaluate (small 3 next to the square root symbol with 1 over 64 inside it) if possible.
I say not possible since it is not a whole number with a solution.
cube root of (1/64) = [cube root of 1]/[cube root of 64] = 1/4

is irrational. For a number to be rational, it must be able to be expressed as a fraction of two integers in lowest terms(prime numbers).
One major thing to know, and you should investigate this for yourself, is that there is no prime number that will have a rational square root. 77 is a product of 11 and 7, both are primes and that means that it will not have a rational square root.
__________
Is rational or irrational? Well, that all depends on the x. It will definitely have a complex root(imaginary), but that doesn't mean that it will be irrational. It all depends on the x for the same reason in the first question.
___________
Is that a right triangle? And what do you mean by altitude in regards to the triangle?
____________
The rule is so your answer is . This also applies to your next question.
The cube root of 1/64. Same thing as above except for cube roots. The cube root of 1 = 1; the cube root of 64 = 4. So the cube root of 1/64 = 1/4.
