Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A + (A+2) = 36 miles / 2 hours
2A + 2 = 18
Subtract 2 from each side
2A = 16
Divide each side by 2
A = 8
.
The slower runner is 8mph (that's fast!)
The faster runner runs an incredible 10 mph
After hour 1, they are 18 miles apart.
After hour 2, they are 36 miles apart.

Two distance runners leave from the same point at the same time, traveling in opposite directions. One runs 2 miles per hour faster than the other. After 2 hours, they are 36 miles apart. Find the speed of each runner.
--------
slower rate: x
faster rate: x+2
-----
Rate at which they are separating:: x + x+2 = 2x+2 mph
-------
Equation:
rate * time = 36
(2x+2)2 = 36
2x+2 = 18
2x = 16
x = 8 mph (slower peron's rate)
x+2 = 10 mph (faster person's rate)
