Question 875366: A motorboat travels 48 miles downstream in 3 hours
The return trip takes 4 hours
Find the rate of the flowing water

Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
down stream rate = 48/3 = 16 mph
up stream rate = 48/4 = 12 mph
let speed of boat in still water be x and current speed be y
x+y=16
x-y=12
2x=28
x=14 mph
x+y=16
So y = 2 mph
