Nolan wants to build a 5ft ramp to get his snowmobile in the back of his truck. The distance from the base of the ramp to the point directly below the back of the truck is 1 foot more than the height of the back of the truck. What is the height of the back of the truck?
(a) Let x represent the height of the truck. Write an expression for the distance the base of the ramp is from the back of the truck.
(b) How high is the back of the truck?
(Hint: use the pythagroean formula)

b) x^2 + (x+1)^2 = 25
x^2 + x^2+2x+1 = 25
2x^2 +2x -24 = 0
divide both sides of = by 2
x^2 +x -12 = 0
factor expression
(x+4)(x-3) = 0
x = 3 is the valid answer
the truck is 3 feet high
