you always have two cases with absolute value, first case you just leave it as is and drop absolute value and second case you put a minus in front of the absolute value part
case 1
x+8=12 subtract 8 from each side
x=4
case 2
-(x+8)=12
-x-8=12 add 8 to each side
-x=20 divide each side by -1
x=-20
