Question 763478: L + 1/4L - 1 = 19
Answer by DrBeeee(684)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Given:
(1) L + 1/(4L) - 1 = 19 or
(2) L + 1/(4L) = 20
Multiply both sides of (2) by 4*L to get
(3) 4L^2 +1 = 80L or
(4) 4L^2 - 80L +1 = 0 or
Use the quadratic equation to find the roots of (4) as
(5) L = {10+sqrt(99.75),10-sqrt(99.75)} or
(6) L = {10+9.98749...,10-9.98749...} or
(7) L = {19.987..,0.0125..}
I'll leave it to you to check these values of L in (1).
