Question 757973: If three spherical balls of wax with radius r are packed into a cylinder also with radius r, and the wax is melted down to what depth will the cylinder be filled. Answer needs to being terms of r. I am stumped and would appreciate the help. Thank you
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If three spherical balls of wax with radius r are packed into a cylinder also with radius r, and the wax is melted down to what depth will the cylinder be filled. Answer needs to being terms of r.
-----
Volume of each ball is (4/3)pi*r^3
----
Total volume of the 3 balls is (4pi*r^3)
------
Width of the cylinder is 2r.
Area of the base is pi^r^2
---
Volume of the melted wax is (area of the base)(height)= (pi*r^2)h
Volume of the melted was is ALSO 4pi*r^3
-----
Equation:
(pi*r^2)h = 4pi*r^3
----
h = 4r (That is the depth of the wax)
