Call the numbers x and y. Let y be the larger number.

The second of 2 numbers is 5 more than twice the first is y = 2x+5

Their sum is 29 is x+y=29.

Substitute 2x+5 for y in the second equation.

x+2x+5=29

3x=24

x=8

y = 2(8) + 5 = 21
